Updating your domain (via IONOS)

Modified on Tue, 17 Mar at 3:37 PM

Moving your domain from IONOS to a new server is a straightforward process. Depending on your comfort level, you can either update the DNS records yourself or invite a 3rd party to handle it for you.

Option 1: Update DNS Records Yourself

Use this method if you have the IP address of your new server and want to point the domain manually.

  1. Log in to IONOS: Go to the IONOS Login page and sign in.
  2. Access Domains: From the main dashboard, click on the "Domains & SSL" tile.
  3. Select Your Domain: Find the domain you wish to update and click the Gear Icon (Actions) next to it, then select DNS.
  4. Edit the 'A' Record:
    • Look for the record where the Type is A, and the Host is @.
    • Click the Pencil Icon (Edit) for this record.
    • In the Points to field, delete the old IP and enter the IP address of your new server (Estate App's server) - 94.237.123.196
    • Click Save.
  5. Edit the 'WWW' Record:
    • Find the record with Host www. It is often a CNAME pointing to @.
    • If it is an A record, update its IP address to match this new server as well - 94.237.123.196
  6. Wait for Propagation: DNS changes can take anywhere from 1 to 24 hours to fully update across the internet, though with IONOS, it often happens within an hour.

Option 2: Give 3rd Party Access

If you would like the team at projects@estateapps.co.uk to handle the technical setup for you, you can use the IONOS Agency Partner feature. This is the most secure way to give access without sharing your own password.

  1. Log in to IONOS: Go to your dashboard.
  2. Navigate to User Management: Click on your Account Name or the User Icon in the top right corner and select "User Management" (or look for "User Permissions").
  3. Invite a User:
    • Look for an option to "Add User" or "Invite Partner".
    • Enter the email address: projects@estateapps.co.uk.
  4. Set Permissions:
    • If prompted for a role, select "Administrator" or a custom role that includes "Domain Management" and "DNS Settings". This ensures we have the necessary rights to update the records.
  5. Send Invitation: We (Estate Apps) will receive an email from IONOS and can then log in to our own dashboard to manage your domain's DNS.

Note: IONOS sometimes changes the layout of their "Partner" portal. If you cannot find the "Add User" button, you can also use the "Agency Partner Network" search within IONOS to find a partner and "Release" access to them.
